Study: Percentage Married In U.S. DropsDecember 26, 2011
A new study out this month showed only 51 percent of adults in the United States are married, a record low, according to the Pew Research Center.
As recently as the 1960s, 72 percent of adults over the age of 18 were married, according to researchers. The number of adults who are married may fall below 50 percent as soon as a few years from now.
The study did note that some of the decrease can be attributed to factors such as increased rates of cohabitation and adults waiting until they reach an older age before they marry for the first time.
The median age of woman getting married rose from 20.3 percent to 26.5 percent in 51 years. The average age of men getting married rose from 22.8 percent to 28.7 percent during that same period.
The study also showed that nearly 30 percent of all adults have never married.
