The three are currently being held on a $1 million bond in Chicago.

If new legislation passes, it would allow parents more time to decide if they want to surrender their baby to the state without fear of punishment.

Rep. Kevin McManus, D- Kansas City, has proposed legislation giving parents up to 60 days to surrender a newborn. Currently, Missouri state law allows a parent to leave their child at a hospital, fire station or police station within five days of birth.

The law was created to give parents an option instead of abandoning their child in unsafe conditions if they were overwhelmed and didn’t feel they could care for the infant.

In February, an infant was found abandoned in Ellisville wrapped in a towel beneath a tree. The 9-year-old mother is now facing two felonies for leaving the baby boy. He is currently in custody with the state of Missouri.

If you or a loved one are considering placing a child up for adoption, you may need to discuss your case with a Missouri family lawyer so you better understand your options. Call our office today for a free, initial consultation.

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal refers to nagging in a relationship “as dangerous to a marriage as adultery or bad finances” and cites it as a top reason some couples seek divorces.

The article cites research conducted by Dr. Howard Markman who is the co-director of the Center for Marital and Family Studies at the University of Denver. Markman pointed out that while all couples deal with nagging at some point in their relationships, those who learn to reduce nagging will increase the changes they will stay together and stay in love.

Research conducted by Markman and published in 2010 in the Journal of Family Psychology showed couples who were unhappy five years into their marriage had about a 20 percent increase in negative communication, such as nagging in addition to about a 12 percent decrease in positive communication.

While it is possible for men to nag, the WSJ article states it is more likely a woman is doing the nagging because they often feel more responsible for managing home life. Either way, both people need to change habits to improve their relationship.

The good news is that even though nagging seems to be hard-wired for some, this does not mean your relationship is doomed. Couples who acknowledge and worked on increasing the positive communication and decreasing the negative communication seemed to fare better in the long run.

A new study out this month showed only 51 percent of adults in the United States are married, a record low, according to the Pew Research Center.

As recently as the 1960s, 72 percent of adults over the age of 18 were married, according to researchers. The number of adults who are married may fall below 50 percent as soon as a few years from now.

The study did note that some of the decrease can be attributed to factors such as increased rates of cohabitation and adults waiting until they reach an older age before they marry for the first time.

The median age of woman getting married rose from 20.3 percent to 26.5 percent in 51 years. The average age of men getting married rose from 22.8 percent to 28.7 percent during that same period.

The study also showed that nearly 30 percent of all adults have never married.
